LITERARY NEWS AND INFORMATION

We The People Bookshelf: A set of classic books for young readers (kindergarten through high school). Each year the National Endowment for the Humanities identifies a theme important to the nation's heritage and selects books that embody that theme. The first three themes were "Courage", "Freedom" and "Becoming American". The latest is "Pursuit of Happiness" (which Tammie was delighted to see includes one of her all time favorite books: Kindred by Octavia Butler).

Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC): They administer the Caldecott, Newbery and other awards. Information on the awards and lists of current and pasts winners can be found on their site.

Domy Books: Located in Houston, Texas. Highly recommended. Scott greatly enjoyed his Fall, 2007 visit.

National Museum of Funeral History: Located in Houston, Texas. Very strange, but surprisingly engaging museum. Worth a stop if you are in the area. We enjoyed our Fall, 2007 visit.

Daphna Rahmil: Very talented, local musician and songwriter.

Two Small Farms: Community supported, organic, agriculture for Santa Cruz County, Monterey County, San Francisco, and the Silicon Valley.

Smart Voter: Nonpartisan election information (including local information for California, Ohio, and New York). The first Web site to offer personalized election information based on a voter's address. Easy to use and full of useful information.

Museum of Printing History: Located in Houston, Texas. Highly recommended. We really enjoyed our Fall, 2006 visit.

Gaylord: Library supplies, furniture, and archival solutions.

Cartoon Art Museum: The Cartoon Art Museum (San Francisco) is the only museum in the United States dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of cartoon art in all its forms.

The Sun Magazine: Non-profit, ad-free monthly magazine that publishes an eclectic mix of personal essays, fiction, interviews, poetry, and photographs - a must read at our house!

Resource Area for Teachers (RAFT): Wonderful organization that takes items that would otherwise end up in landfill and turns them into low cost math, science, and art supplies/projects for teachers. Our favorite place to volunteer. Located in San Jose.

Zoetrope All-Story Magazine: Quarterly literary publication founded by Francis Ford Coppola in 1997 to explore the intersection of story and art, fiction and film.
